Healing and the Multidimensional Body
Another Way of Seeing Fibromyalgia
by Dr. Lynn Bamberger
As I talked with Lucy, I could see the tell tale signs of pain written on her face. She suffered from fibromyalgia, a painful and debilitating disease, which is poorly understood by medical science. As listened to her, my inner sight began to penetrate her skin. My attention was drawn to muscles, which appeared to be experiencing an energetic conflict between a desire to move forward and a desire to hold back that that arose out of self limiting beliefs, that told her not to move at all. As Lucy (her name and the specifics of her condition have been changed to protect her privacy) and I worked together, I was acutely aware that the predominant bio-medical model, which views the body solely from its chemical and anatomical perspectives, is severely lacking, in large part because it separates body and consciousness. This arbitrary, and I must add not scientifically substantiated, assumption of separation greatly hinders the ability to effectively diagnose and treat many chronic debilitating diseases, among them autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, cancer, heart disease, and so many more. To help Lucy get well, she and I needed to work within a model that could view her body as an integrated functional wholeness that includes imaginative, emotional, mental, unconscious and spiritual dimensions, in addition to the energetic (life force) and material (chemical and structural) dimensions. This model of the multidimensional body is one that re-integrates body and consciousness. Thoughts, including a wide variety of auto-suggestions, and emotions routinely run through our consciousness. Over time they are programmed into the physical body and run habitually, often outside of our conscious awareness. If these programs are of a negative or limiting nature, they can become what I call "auto-toxic beliefs" and "auto-toxic emotions". Auto-toxicity is a state where something in us becomes toxic, destructive, or disease producing to us. It plays a large part in most diseases, particularly the auto-immune diseases. Lucy’s limiting beliefs were conditioned into her body at a very young age. For her these beliefs produced an "I want to - but" struggle which eventually became auto-toxic and the beginnings of fibromyalgia could be noted in her body. Efforts by her medical doctors to relieve pain had very limited effects because Lucy’s pain was, and was not, physical. It could only be viewed as physical when seen in the context of a multi-dimensional model. It was not physical when viewed through the perspective of the western medical model, which addresses only the chemical and the structural aspects of the physical body. Chemical substances, that Lucy was given to ease her pain, did not address its cause and were, therefore, ineffective. Her auto-toxic beliefs thwarted the natural impulses that arose out of her Spirit, her Innate Intelligence, that sought to move her toward a healthy, happy, and purposeful life, wherein she could fully express her natural interests, abilities, and talents. As a child Lucy wanted to study physics. It was an era when girls were not welcomed into the sciences. She accepted the limitations of the world around her, as her own limitations, and chose a more "lady like" career. She sublimated the desire for a career in scientific research, and became an elementary school teacher. Although she placed an emphasis on science in teaching, teaching was not what she really wanted to be doing. When Lucy taught, her unfilled desire was often stimulated, creating impulses in her muscles to move toward her hearts desire, as the thought of biting into a lemon produces the physical response of salivation. But she did not allow herself to act on these natural impulses. She was at a standstill, and all the while her muscles were charged and geared up for movement. This energetic conflict was draining her energy. (Fatigue is factor found in most cases of fibromyalgia). The fatigue heightened her feelings of being stuck, which caused Lucy to feel frustrated and angry emotionally, which she then repressed, because she believed that good girls don’t have these feelings. These repressed emotions became toxic, which added to the pain in her physical body, which led to further limitation of movement in a cycle of disease. Is it no wonder that most cases of fibromyalgia are found in woman, who have been far more limited in their ability to express their Spiritual impulses in the work world than are men? While many cases of fibromyalgia have belief conflicts similar to those Lucy experienced, some do not. One woman I worked with had severe fibromyalgia. Her religious beliefs held that those who were not of her faith would be punished in the end by God. As she spoke of this end time, I could feel the hate she for others, not of her faith, build up in the muscles of her body, as if her body were gearing up to strike these people down herself. This hate blocked her from the experience of her own love and compassion. Unlike Lucy, who recovered her health and was able to live a richly rewarding life, this lady never did get well. She would not let go of the hatred and judgment she held in her heart for those of different religions. I have found that to heal you must ultimately love and forgive, so that you can let your goodness shine in and through you. This was the road Lucy traveled back to health. She forgave herself for internalizing the limiting beliefs of others. She forgave herself for the judgments she had of her thoughts, feelings, actions and inactions. She forgave herself, also, for creating the disease that had generated so much pain in her body. As she forgave, she learned to walk in trueness to her own convictions and impulses until she became whole and well again. It sometimes takes great courage to heal because you must look at all your own faces, some of which you might prefer not to see, others which are magnificent beyond your wildest imagination. Lucy had that courage and she lived it. In her willingness to look at the face of her mistakes, she came to a greater understanding of her own Innate Spirit in all its wonder and magic. From a multidimensional perspective fibromyalgia - like many diseases - begins when you fail to follow your hearts desire and fulfill your life purpose. Healing begins when you reconnect with those impulses, through love and forgiveness. A skilled chiropractor or acupuncturist, who has an understanding of the workings of the multidimensional body can help you on your journey back to health. Chiropractic works through freeing your body’s nervous system, which is its physical control mechanism, of both toxic, and structural interferences to its optimal functioning. Acupuncture works in a similar fashion by removing blocks to your body’s energetic control system. Your body is a vehicle of manifestation. You manifest your creations, both positive and negative, first in your psyche and then in your body. As you live in a body that is negatively programmed, you create negative experiences in your life. You create disease, poverty, and disharmony inside of you and in your relationships with the people, events, and environments around you. The good news - and the bas news - is that you are a creator and as such you have the power to create change and make a difference in your health and in your life. More Articles
